Avoiding Spam Email

A common technique used by spammers is to harvest e-mail addresses from websites using spam bots. If you have a website that contains your email address, you can encode your email address into its equivalent decimal entity, through the use of "Character Entities." The encoded email address might look like this:

   mailto:yourna&#109...

The encoded email address can be read and translated back into its original form (e.g. info@myclinic.com) by almost any web browser. It will appear like a standard email address to the viewer, however, the spam bots can't recognize and harvest it.

Here's what to do:

  1. Access the following web page and enter your email address.

    http://www.wbwip.com/wbw/emailencoder.html

The form will then display an encoded version of your email address.

  2. Now replace all instances of your email address on your pages with the encoded email address.
