Financial Options for Infertility Treatment

IHR.com directory of financial assistance providers

The high cost of infertility treatment can be daunting to many seeking such treatment. This page discusses the following financial options to help alleviate the burden:
  1. IVF refund programs
  2. IVF financing
  3. Low-cost IVF
  4. Standard health insurance

1. IVF Refund Programs

With IVF refund programs, the patient prepays for a certain number maximum number of IVF cycles. If the patient does not take home a baby after a certain number of cycles, then the patient receives most of, or all, of their money back. Some examples:

  • If, after the third cycle, no live birth has occurred, the majority of the fee would be refunded to the patient.
  • If a live birth has occurred on the first or second cycle, the fertility clinic retains the entire fee.

Typical refund program features:

Age limitations Typically contains age limitations
Amount of fee A patient might pay, a discounted fee, in advance, for three IVF cycles.
Minimum number of cycles before getting refund Typically three to five cycles
Amount refunded Typically 70% to 100% (sometimes called "money back guarantee")
Types of services covered Donor egg recipients and couples requiring ICSI are typically eligible for for this type of program at slightly higher fees.
Is financing available? Typically the programs also offer financing (i.e., loans).

2. IVF Financing

Unsecured loans are available for coverage of infertility treatment and pharmaceutical care.  Typically pharmaceutical care can cost up to 20% to 30% of the total expense of a treatment. Some of the loan programs are operated by organizations that specializes in IVF loans, while other loan organizations also provide financing for IVF as well as non-medical needs.

A refund guarantee may be offered in which the patient will be given a refund of the money spent, in the event that there is no live birth at the end of the treatment.

3. Low-Cost IVF

There are three ways that you can obtain IVF treatment at a lower cost:

  • Overseas clinics that offer IVF at a low cost. This is sometimes advertised as an "IVF vacation."
  • Clinics that specifically offer low-cost treatment
  • Participating in an IVF research program

4. Standard Health Insurance

Some U.S. states have laws that pertain to insurance coverage related to infertility. The laws vary by state.

The Employment Retirement Income and Security Act of 1974 exempts companies that self-insure from state regulation.
