Using Your Own Website Developer
to Update Your Website
Sometimes IHR clients continue to use IHR hosting, however, they hire an
outside website developer to update their website. In this situation, IHR
provides server access to the website developer. Although you may discontinue
using the IHR website development services, you will continue to use the IHR
Hosting/Promotion package, which provides
lots of advantages.
IHR strongly recommends that you
note the following guidelines if you want to maintain an effective website:
- It's ideal if your website developer maintains the current file names for
your web pages, so that you don't lose traffic from other websites and search
engines, which may have taken years to develop. For example, if the developer
changes a file name from "contact.html" to "contactus.html" then all current
search engine links and any external website links into your site will now
become invalid. The search engines may crawl your website and find the new "contactus.html"
however, that will depend on how well the site is optimized for search
engines.
- If you must change the file names, then set up some web page or
server-side redirects, to redirect users from the old file name to the new
file name. IHR can help with server-side redirects.
- When IHR develops web pages, we ensure that the pages are optimized for
search engines. Make sure that your website developer knows how to optimize your
web pages for search engines and maintains an optimization strategy for your
website. IHR provides a web page to help -
Ensure That Your Site Design is Optimized for Search Engines.
- When IHR builds websites, we extensively use two technologies: server-side
includes (SSI) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). It would be ideal if your website developer
would also use
these technologies, which offer the following significant advantages:
- Make your site easier to maintain. For example, if a website-wide change
(e.g., the font colors or navigation bar) is made, IHR can typically update one file to make the website-wide change,
rather than having to update dozens of web pages.
- Provide consistency among your web pages. For example, all your web
pages can have needed consistency with your navigation bar or fonts.
- Do not update files or directories you are not familiar with. For example:
- IHR typically generates hosted website statistics in a "webstats"
directory
- IHR typically adds a custom 404 error page in the "errors" directory.
- In order to continue to use the IHR Hosting/Promotion package, you must
keep the IHR links on the bottom of your web pages, as described in the
IHR Web Development and Hosting Terms of
Agreement page, section D.
By following some of the guidelines above, you can provide additional
assurance that your website will continue to function effectively after it's
updated. If you or your website developer have any questions or comments, feel free to contact IHR.
