Updating Your Own Web Pages
on the IHR Server
For various reasons (e.g. to keep costs down), some IHR hosted clients want
to update their own web pages. This page explains how you can do this. Set up
an HTML Editor and FTP program on your computer
The first step is obtain and use the following two types of applications:
- HTML editor (also called HTML authoring tool) - Use this tool for updating
your web pages. This page contains a
list of free and paid HTML editors.
- FTP (File Transfer Protocal) program - Use this tool for uploading and
downloading files from your computer to the IHR web server. This Wikipedia
page contains a
list of free
and paid FTP clients. IHR uses WS-FTP.
Note that some HTML editors have a build in FTP program, so in this case you
would only need to obtain one program.
IHR will provide the following information to help you configure your FTP
product to connect to the IHR server: host, User ID, and password.Ongoing Page Updates
After you've set up the application(s) on your computer, you can begin updating
your web pages with these simple steps:
- Use the FTP application to download the web page you want to change.
- Use the HTML editor to change the page.
- Use the FTP application to upload the changed page to your website.
Potential Issues/Problems
- You will be responsible for learning and using the application(s).
There is lots of online help for this.
- It may take you some time to learn all the tools. You may want to ask
yourself if your time is worth this effort.
- If you know what you're doing, your web pages may be fine. However, if
you make a serious mistake you could ruin the web page, so IHR recommends
that you make backups of your web pages, in case there was a
mistake.
