Ensuring You Have Secure FTP Sessions
Some IHR clients have FTP (file transfer protocol) access to their websites
in order to update their own web pages. Please review the security issues below
if you have FTP access to your IHR-hosted website.
When IHR provides a username and password to you to access your website on
the IHR server, you will need to be responsible for securing that access. As you
are probably aware, there are hackers on the Internet constantly searching for
open websites that they can break into.
Please do the following to ensure that you have secure FTP sessions:
- Use virus protection software on your computer. This is the most
important action item. Although this is not widely known, there are now
malicious viruses that can do the following:
a) the virus breaks into a user's personal computer and searches inside their
Windows Registration Database for stored FTP access information (e.g. username
and password).
b) the virus then uses its own built-in FTP program, gains access to the
website with the user's access information, and uploads malicious files to the
website.
c) unsuspecting users then come to the website and the malicious
files are automatically downloaded to their personal computers. Their
computers are now compromised and the virus now searches their computers for
FTP information to access other web servers.
- If you are willing, don't store your password inside your FTP program.
When you do that, it will most likely be stored in the Windows Registration
Database where it can be found by a malicious virus. You can enter your
password each time you use the FTP program. If you think you might forget your
password, you can store your password(s) in a text file hidden on your
computer.
- Do not share your password with anyone, unless they need the access.
- Do not leave your password around your office on pieces of paper or sticky
notes where someone else (e,g, a potential thief) might find it.
- IHR uses passwords that are a combination of letters and numbers and that
are long enough so that they are difficult for hackers to try to guess.
